And Lack Thereof
Defining “Sovereignty”
An oft-repeated theme of this newsletter is the discussion of empires, their rise and fall, and the maintenance of the American empire in particular. To repeat claims made in other essays, I am of the belief that the United States is the most powerful empire to have ever existed, that the cultural, political, and economic chaos it precipitates is part of a flexible strategy for its maintenance as the global hegemon, and that it is unlikely to be toppled any time soon. I’ve referred to the United States before as the Liberal Reich, a reference to the Nazi belief that they would rule over the world for 1000 years. The comparison is not a condemnation but an observation; part of this perspective involves an assumption that the United States’s revolutionary method of doing politics (i.e., liberal democracy) will continue to evolve around the world in uninterrupted fashion for centuries from now.
