Intermission 2
Sideline pieces on hold
As established last month, my life has gotten very busy, so I do not have time to produce quality biweekly “sideline” essays on current events for the next few months. I intend to return to that project relatively soon, though cannot say for certain when that will be. In place of those posts, I will continue to share others’ essays who were and remain influential in my own work. I do not necessarily endorse every conclusion or prescription they offer, but they were thought-provoking nonetheless.
Today I have Edward Luttwak’s “Why Fascism is the Wave of the Future,” at times also referred to as “The Future is Fascist,” from the London Review of Books, 1994. Luttwak is a controversial figure in many circles, often seen as a populist opportunist. Regardless of those claims, his predictions for the newly globalized world market were prescient and worth interrogating. While some of what he has claimed has not come to pass, and other elements are exaggerated, the thought process behind these claims is impressive.
